Tower cranes at golden hour

0.41 lost-time injuries per million hours. Published.

ARKAN is a main contractor in Dubai — substructure, superstructure, MEP and external works. This page carries the three numbers this industry keeps quiet: our injury rate, the days we take to pay a subcontractor, and how many passports we hold.

Lost-time injuries per million man-hours. The UAE construction average sits nearer 1.2, and any contractor claiming 0.00 across 3 million hours is not reporting

Lost-time injuries2

A hand laceration and a fall from 1.4 m. Both investigated, both reports available to clients on request

Near-miss reports1,940

We want this number HIGH. A site reporting no near misses is a site where nobody reports

near misses reported — up 31%

We want the near-miss count high and rising. It is the only safety metric that improves when a site gets more honest rather than more lucky.

We do not hold passports. Not one.

01

We do not hold passports

Not one, not for a day, not 'for safekeeping'. It is illegal under UAE law and it happens anyway across this industry. Every worker on an ARKAN site holds their own documents, and any subcontractor found doing otherwise is off the site the same week.

02

Wages via WPS, on time, every month

Salaries are paid through the Wage Protection System by the 5th. Our worst month in three years was the 7th, after a bank holiday clash, and we told the workforce before they had to ask.

03

Accommodation we would show you unannounced

Four to a room, air-conditioned, with a kitchen and a laundry. Clients are welcome to visit the accommodation without notice — the offer is on this page precisely so it can be taken up.

04

Summer midday break, properly

No work between 12:30 and 15:00 from 15 June to 15 September, as the law requires. Enforced with a signed site register, because the rule is widely broken in the last week of September when programmes slip.

Subcontractors are paid in 27 days.

Not 90, not on receipt from the client. Passing cash-flow risk down to a plastering firm with nine employees is how this industry breaks people, and it is the term we are proudest of.
